Holiday reading

Well done to these awesome children who met my holiday reading challenge!

A few notices...

Kia Ora Whanau,

Just a few wee notices as we head in to week three.

We will be having Livvy Sheehan, an intern from the New Zealand Graduate School of Education with us until the end of term. As the term continues she will be working with the children and teaching. Livvy will send home a note this week so that you can get a feel for what she will be doing in Room 12. Room 13 will also be hosting an intern, Nikki Gosden.

This week I begin teaching the Accelerated Learning in Mathematics programme. In order to do this I am released from the classroom for an hour per day. During this time Stephanie Johnston, our ESOL teacher, will be teaching Room 12.

Swimming is coming up in week 4 and 5. Please make sure that you bring your permission slip back, and make your payment to the office. The office is happy to discuss making payment plans if you need to.

Lastly, as our spaces have joined and we have begun sharing almost all of our learning experiences, we have changed the names of room 12 and 13. Room 12 and now called the 'explorers' and room 13 are called 'adventurers' as a team the children have named us Room twelveen.

Hope you have all kept nice and toasty over the weekend!
I am sure there are some very disappointed children with the lack of snow.

Term 3

Welcome to Term 3!

There are lots of exciting things coming up this term, we are going to be very busy with it only being 9 weeks long. Please look out in the next week or so for a notice about swimming, this is happening in week 4 and 5.

I hope you all had a lovely, restful holiday break. I enjoyed spending some time with my family, and doing more shopping than I probably should have!

This term we welcome Adam and Ruth to our whanau. We hope you have enjoyed your time with us so far.

Our new furniture arrived today, as I am sure you have probably already heard. The children are very excited about it. We would love for you to come and have a look!

Life Education Bus

This week Claire and Harold visited Parkview school with the life education bus.

She taught us about the inside of our bodies and how our body systems work. This was really helpful for our body systems inquiry groups, and they could add the information to their research.

Harold scanned Cole's body and we got to look inside at the different parts of his body.

Buddy bench

This week we finished our buddy bench. Jaqui from bunnings came and visited us on Friday to see the finished product.  we have spent lots of time painting it. It will now be out at morning tea and lunch times for children who are feeling lonely. When they sit on it someone will offer to play with them.

Look out for our thank you card to Bunnings on the community notice board by the check out at the shirley store.

Fuelled for Life

Today Ms de Thier introduced us to body systems. Here is a wee video she showed us after we explored our initial thoughts. It helps to explain the different systems we will be looking at over the next few weeks.

Buddy bench

As part of our inquiry last term, we wanted to do something to help improve our school community. Room 12 wanted to get a buddy bench. We wrote to bunnings and asked if they would be able to donate a park bench. On Friday, Jacqui from bunnings came and delivered our park bench. We are so thankful! Today we put it together, and now we are going to paint it and get a sign made. Watch this space!

Thank you Bunnings
Ready for us to put together

Fairy bread fractions

Room 12 maths children have been learning about fractions. In week one we made fairy bread. We had to cut it in to quarters. Mrs H would give us a fractions and that was how much we were allowed to eat.

Fuelled for life

We are learning about junk food dude and green smoothie guy. We watched this YouTube clip with Ms de Thier.

Junk food dude only eats junk food, and green smoothie guy only eats healthy food. Room 12 and 13 mixed themselves up and looked at food advertisements. We made collages of what foods we thought the two children would eat.
Mrs H made groceries lists from the collages. We were surprised to find out that it was more expensive to eat healthily. We thought it would be the opposite!

How to eat an oreo

Room 12 and 13 have been learning about writing instructions. Last week Ms de Thier lead our writing on how to eat an oreo. We were given this YouTube clip as a prompt.

Ms de Thier gave everyone an oreo to eat. How do you eat your oreo?

Sports day

On the Thursday of week one we had a fun sports day to launch our fit for life topic this term - fuelled for life. We were put in to house groups. There was a tug of war. There was also an obstacle course and a game.
Thanks Youthtown sport for helping with the day!

New furniture

In the holidays Mrs H and Ms de Thier went shopping together, to get some new furniture for the level 4 children. Mrs h and Ms de Thier bought 2 rugs, 4 mini beanbags, 2 stools and some clipboards. They bought it so the level 4 people could have their own learning space.  Room 12 and 13 love their new furniture!
Thank you to the Home and School group for sponsoring this.

What's happening - Week 10

Kia Ora!

We have already hit week 10! Wow this term is going fast. Next week will be our final week before the school holidays.

A little about what is happening this week:

Reading: This week your child will be bringing home a poem each day instead of a book. This is to allow me to check reading levels so I can check we are all up to date. I encourage you to still read a book of choice with your child each night.

Writing: We have completed our work on descriptions, and for the next two weeks are just working on some fun writing ideas. Our first piece of published writing for the year - the birds nest - is now up in Room 12. Come and check it out!

Spelling: It is really important that your child's words come to and from school each day as we also do activities in class to hep them learn these.

Maths: We have settled in well to our maths interchange classes and are all really enjoying it!

A wee reminder about that the money for the play is due by the end of this week. It is $4.50. I will be sending home another notice tomorrow as a wee reminder to those I haven't heard back from =)

Kind Regards,
Fiona Haythornthwaite

Kia Ora Room 12 whanau!

Hope you all had a lovely weekend, and have had a good start back to the week.
Here's a quick look at what will be happening this week.

Maths:
We will be finishing off our unit on statistics and probability. Next week we will be starting our interchange programme.

Literacy:
This week will be our final week writing recounts before we move on. Our topic for this week is 'A time you've felt scared'.

Remember we also have golf on Tuesdays, and Youthtown sport on Thursdays in even weeks. Please make sure that you are wearing the right footwear to be able to participate fully in these.

Thank you to all the families that came to our Goal Setting evenings. It was really nice getting to know you all a bit better. The goals will be coming home in their Reading Logs tomorrow.

This week our Green Team and the Year 7/8 children are participating in the School Gardens Show. If you haven't decided what you're doing this weekend it would be great to see you there and voting for Parkview.
